In Resto Shop we give first-gens a lot of ink. This month we're giving third-gens some love. We've had a few readers requesting information on the stamped tag on later third-gens. The tag is located on the radiator support structure of the body and has six digits stamped in it. On '85- 86 Camaros the tag is located on the passenger side of the support and on '87- 92 Camaros the tag is near the center of the support, under the intake plenum. The '82- 84 Camaros have a completely different tag format.
We love to research details like these tags, so we inquired with our many sources but came up empty-handed. There were plenty of guesses and assumptions, but that wasn't good enough.
Our hunch was that the tag contained the body/unit production number, which was used to determine the order in which the Camaros were built as they travelled down the assembly line. As a side note, the VIN is not used to identify the order in which the Camaros were built.
The only way to confirm our theory was to find a third-gen Camaro with an original broadcast sheet. This new search led us to two very cool '92 Camaros.
The first Camaro found with an accompanying broadcast sheet was Leonard Stevenson's '92 Z28. His Z28 happens to be the last Camaro built at the Van Nuys, California, plant before it was shut down after 45 years of vehicle production. If you ever wanted to restore a '92 Camaro to exact factory condition, his site would be all the research material you'd need. We wish there was the same information available for first- and second-gen Camaros. Leonard's car still has less than 200 miles on the odometer. He was nice enough to pull the intake snorkel off to check his tag number against the D.P. Number (097825) and the last six digits of the Schedule/Job number (0097825) on his broadcast sheet. They matched!
The second '92 Camaro we found is a low-mile, well-documented and optioned '92 Z28 owned by Chris Dundon. He originally purchased the car to tear it apart and turn it into a Pro Touring monster with a supercharged LS engine, six-speed, and Corvette IRS, but he hasn't had the heart to modify it. In fact, he's going to sell it and start with a less perfect third-gen. Chris says that it still has the original tires! Could you tear apart a car of this caliber? He checked the tag numbers (079531) against his broadcast sheet and they matched!
Now we need to figure out the breakdown of the numbers and what they designate. The Firebirds came down the same line and have the same number format on their tags. Did the Camaros have their own body number system to designate the build order on the line, or did the Firebirds share the same number system? The journey continues…
