Second Annual Holley LS Fest - Lightning Strikes Twice
|

Drag photographers love Kurt... Drag photographers love Kurt Anderson since every launch is full of wheel-standing goodness. The amazing part is that even with this, his car is very consistent. In Round Two of the LSX Rumble class, he ran 10.474 against his 10.50 dial in. Unfortunately, he broke out in the Third Round against Mike Morris. Before hitting the strip,... Before hitting the strip, we put our ’10 project car on the track’s scales where it weighed in at a portly 3,944 pounds, sans driver and with a -tank of gas. That’s a ton or two of weight to sling about, but Yancy Johns still managed a respectable 46.94 seconds on the autocross. Holley had a huge display... Holley had a huge display of all the new LS widgets for sale or in development. And while we loved the new valve covers, oil pans, and adaptors, we were really drooling over these intakes, especially the LS7 Cross-Ram. Spectre Performance’s Brandy... Spectre Performance’s Brandy Morrow caught some air going over the course’s infamous speed bump. She worked the second-gen hard, maybe too hard, and blew the engine late Sunday just after securing a spot in the autocross shootout. Undeterred, Brandy jumped into Spectre’s El Camino and managed to hold onto a Third Place overall finish in the autocross. The Speed-Stop Challenge is... The Speed-Stop Challenge is far harder than it looks. Think of it as a drag race with a stop box slapped at the end. Brake too soon and your time sucks; too late and you melt tires or murder cones. Licata was short on horsepower compared to many of the other cars in the ABS class, but he still managed a 9.39-second run in his Wilwood equipped ‘01 Z28. Car Craft Magazine sponsored... Car Craft Magazine sponsored the LS Engine Swap Challenge. A crew from the School of Automotive Machinists (SAM), with a Monte Carlo was pitted against Hot Rod Revolution and their ’85 Camaro. The idea was to see who could get their old engine out, and put the new 6.0L Holley equipped LS engine in place and driving in the shortest amount of time. It was close and the Camaro crew got it done in 1 hour and 1 minute. Unfortunately for them, the SAM crew was a just a few minutes quicker. Mark Stielow came out to hone... Mark Stielow came out to hone his skills in preparation for the upcoming Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational. In the autocross, he laid down a 43.92, which was good enough to get him into the final shootout, but clutch issues sent him home Saturday night. Even so, his Second Place ABS Speed-Stop time of 8.47 seconds, and his drag time of 11.414, left him tied for Second Place in the Grand Championship Competition with Brian Finch at 63 points. The real bummer for Mark was that he missed out on the five points for the car show; points that would have given him the overall championship. Alan Miller went out in the... Alan Miller went out in the First Round of the Fifth-Gen Camaro Challenge with an 11.612 against his 11.00 dial in. He had better luck in the Speed-Stop Challenge where he came in Third among the ABS cars with an 8.63-second e.t. Bret Voelkel worked his ’67... Bret Voelkel worked his ’67 Camaro hard all weekend and managed a 44.68-second lap on the autocross and a Speed-Stop Challenge time of 9.23 seconds. Combined with his drag time of 12.222, he finished 10th overall for the Grand Championship. When the dust settled and... When the dust settled and all the various competitions were tabulated, the guy on top was Detroit Speed’s Kyle Tucker. Kyle took First in the autocross with a 42.07, Third in the Non-ABS Speed-Stop with an 8.85-second e.t., and he knocked down a blistering 11.823 on the dragstrip. Looks like he gets bragging rights until next year.
