This is the complete BMR front coilover kit (PN ACP007, $759.00). The new tubular control arms come assembled with new ball joints and are a very rigid, high-quality upgrade to the factory suspension. When you calculate the time and cost of refurbishing the stock arms, the BMR tubular models are a good deal. Plus, they look way cooler.
•With the excitement of seeing our Dart 372 sitting on the stand, almost too much to handle, our Project Crossfire Z had its tired and grungy old 140,000-mile heart ripped out for the repower. Unfortunately, sticking your sparkling new powerplant into your tired ride requires a bit more than an afternoon hose-down. If you want to do things right, it's also a time to be prepared for plenty of instances of "while you are at it." Such is the case when we prepared to tackle our first engine swap task of changing the Camaro's motor mounts. While the clamshell style of mount is quite reliable, the thought of leaving them intact was inconceivable, though I'll admit it did cross my mind given the reality of what it takes to replace them. But while we were at it, disassembling most of the front suspension to access the nuts on the engine mount bolts, we dialed up BMR Fabrication for a set of their fabricated tubular control arms and complete front coilover kit. Shaving 29-plus pounds from the front of the car, the kit offers you the ability to adjust ride height from 2 to 3 inches and also improves upon the stock geometry by positioning the springs farther out on the control arm, parallel with the front struts. This increases the suspension's leverage and emulates a true McPherson strut system, where the spring is coiled over the strut. With the car in the possession of Joel Rode, owner of Hot Rod Specialties in Upland, California, we dug into our upgrade.

Before removing the sway bar, we supported the control arm with a floor jack. A wayward flying coil spring could do some serious damage.

Slowly lowering the jack will allow you to safely remove the stock coil spring. For the time being, we left the strut attached to the spindle to support the assembly until the new control arms were installed.

Because of the added leverage points, the BMR setup uses a much softer 3-inch diameter spring (200 pounds vs. 520 pounds for the stock spring) to accomplish the same performance and ride quality as the stock 51/2-inch model. The 3-inch springs are also available in a much wider variety of spring rates for more precise tunability.
